Instagram accepts widths between 320 and 1080 pixels. Anything wider is scaled down, and anything outside the allowed ratios (between 4:5 and 1.91:1 for feed posts) is cropped automatically, often cutting off heads or text. Resizing yourself lets you choose the crop. Portrait 4:5 usually gets the most attention because it fills more of the phone screen.
Posting a carousel? Use the same preset for every photo. Choose several files at once, tap each thumbnail to adjust its crop, then "Download all".
